Living History Museum Project
During the heyday of railroad The Pullman Porters were the workers aboard the trains. They provided service and attended to the needs of the passengers on the dining and sleeping cars. The porters and the excellent service they provided were integral and indispensable to the rise and success of the passenger railroad industry. In the beginning the Pullman Company hired only African American men and women for the jobs of porters and maids. These men and women become so good at their craft, they became known throughout the world as “The Ambassadors of Hospitality.” The success of passenger rail in the United States would not have been possible without the contributions and professionalism exhibited by the Pullman porters and maids.
To honor the contributions and service of these “Hospitality Ambassadors,” APRPPM is adding a “Living History ” museum component to its existing facilities. The International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAMAW) union, who has purchased and donated an actual Pullman Dining Car to the museum, is one of the union organizations supporting this effort. The Car will be made available to event planners for meetings and special events.
We must raise funding for the restoration of the Train Car, and to transport and set the train on the museum grounds. Make a contribution to the project.
